Self-Defense Workshop
How to verbally and legally respond to harrassment
On Sunday, August 5th, AAWAA presents a Self-Defense Workshop. As AAWAA’s audience has increased, at times our artists and guests have experienced unwanted attention or harassment. As women visible in the public eye it is important to learn how to assert yourself in order to prevent ongoing harassment and how to diffuse difficult situations.
Goal of the workshop: create awareness about types of offenders and how to respond to inappropriate comments or actions using effective verbal and body language. Making it clear that their presence is unwanted and their behavior will not be tolerated, we can potentially prevent a situation from escalating. However, if a situation does escalate you will learn how to defend yourself against an opponent of any size. In addition, a San Francisco District Attorney will provide valuable information on how to legally protect yourself from all forms of harassment through restraining orders and police reports.
The workshop will feature guest speakers from San Francisco State Univeristy, San Francsico's Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) and the San Francisco Police Department.

Julie D. Soo, San Francisco Commision on the Status of Women
Julie is a senior staff counsel with the California Department of Insurance and serves on the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women. She is a member of the Board of Trustees for Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and is active with the California Democratic Party Executive Board as a co-chair of the Platform Committee, now entering her sixth term as a delegate. ![cathy-png (1) 2]( "cathy-png (1) 2")
Cathy Gould Rath, San Francisco State University
In 1996, Cathy became the Program Manager of Transforming Communities (TC),
the only organization in Marin County specifically devoted to providing domestic
violence intervention and prevention services. In collaboration with local law enforcement, Cathy co-developed the Girls Forum, a sexual assault prevention workshop for teen girls. Cathy earned a Master’s Degree in Education at SFSU and was invited to return in 2010 as an adjunct professor in the Health Education department.
SELF-DEFENSE INSTRUCTORS:Andrew Rodriguez, Owner & head instructor at Karate Team USA, 3rd Degree Black Belt
Sensei Andrew Rodriguez has studied Shorin-Ryu Karate for most of his life. He began as a student at Karate Team USA- Millbrae in 1990 and, where he reached 3rd degree black belt under Sensei Martinez. He has been teaching children and adults for over 15 years.
Khay Hembrador, Sempai at Karate Team USA
Sensei Khay Hembrador came up through the ranks of Karate Team USA Geneva as a teen. Khay has many years of experience teaching both Shorin Ryu Karate and Kickboxing. She now teaches kids karate I & II classes, and Cardio Kickboxing. She is a 3rd degree brown belt and is also Turbokick certified.

Through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs, we offer thought-provoking perspectives that challenge societal assumptions and promote dialogue.
